Low Cost Counseling

do you have a high deductible insurance plan, no insurance, or insurance that is not widely accepted?

The Healing Tree is proud to host Masters Level student interns, who are able to provide low cost individual therapy sessions. A Master’s Level student typically has about one year of practicum experience under their belt before coming to The Healing Tree, and works closely with both their Field Instructor and the rest of the team to bring their classroom knowledge into an on-the-ground setting.

Our interns typically come from Rutgers University’s MSW program with a focus on trauma-informed care. In the Certificate in Interpersonal Violence and Trauma program, students take coursework geared towards a deeper understanding of the impact of trauma on behavior, attachment, mood, and functioning. They learn about policies affecting victims and survivors of abuse and trauma as well as theories that guide the evidence based approaches they bring to their field practicum experience.

Session fees for working with a graduate intern range from $40 per session to $0, based on your specific needs. To inquire about setting up an appointment with our current intern, please contact admin@thehealingtreecc.org or (732) 672-8754.

What can i expect when working with an intern?

We are proud to be a part of the shaping of the next generation of trauma-informed therapists. Our interns work closely in supervision with a senior therapist on our team who has been specifically trained in supervising graduate students. Interns meet for weekly supervision and are provided with a wealth of training from our entire team before beginning their first client sessions. An intern’s supervisor will occasionally sit in on a session to help the interns build their clinical skillset and their insight into the cases they are working on in an effort to provide the highest quality care possible.

In order to determine if an intern will be a good fit for you, our intern supervisor and clinical director work together to make sure that referrals match the intern’s skillset, areas of interest, and training prior to making a referral. You will have direct access to the intern’s supervisor if you do have any questions along the way!

Because our interns are students, this means that they are with us from late August/early September through late April. As the school year comes to a close, it is a top priority to make sure that if you need continuing care, you are linked with a referral prior to your last session!

Calvin Hui (he/him/his) is a budding MSW student and emergent sex therapist. He has multiple years of experience working with the sex and gender diverse community. Starting off as a volunteer for The Pride Center of NJ, he created an online support group for queer folk to vent and hold space for one another during the pandemic. Calvin then transitioned into a sexuality counselor, where he provided an open, non-judgmental space for clients to discuss and receive support around healthy sexuality. In his previous practicum at Pathways SBYSP, he gained experience working clinically with at-risk teens in school settings, which was further augmented through his summer internship at IEP Youth Services – where he worked with youth on probation. Calvin is committed to not only addressing underrepresented and misrepresented populations – as a queer person of color – he also works actively to combat the social stigma and shame that often accompanies being sexually “different”. In his final year of the MSW program at Rutgers University and with his participation in the certificate program on Interpersonal Violence and Trauma (C-IVT), Calvin continues to sharpen his clinical skills in addressing trauma in order to bring the highest level of care to his clients.

With immense fervor, Calvin is honored to bring his evergrowing skillset to aid The Healing Tree in helping to develop a more community-centric and sustainable world we share.
